About Oak Hill Cemetery

 Our History

Oak Hill Cemetery is a non-profit, non-denominational, municipal cemetery that was incorporated in 1867 just outside of the northwest corner of the village of Herkimer, NY. At that time, it was commonplace for communities to move cemeteries from centralized locations within towns and villages to more rural areas. This is exactly what happened when many of the remains from the cemetery in the middle of the village were disinterred from the municipal cemetery, and moved to Oak Hill Cemetery so the former could become what is now known as Myers Park.

Like many cemeteries established during this period, Oak Hill features natural plantings throughout (mature trees and shrubbery), and is primarily surrounded by a natural border of wooded land.  The architecture of many of the private mausoleums, as well as the receiving vault, are reflective of the ornate and gothic style that was popular at that time. Many of the older statues and monuments are also very "artsy" and ornate.

The fascinating architecture, along with some historic residents have led to Oak Hill Cemetery to receive the distinction of being listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The location of the cemetery provides an incredible, hilltop view overlooking the scenic Mohawk River and across to the hills on the other side of the valley. While the view is spectacular year-round, it is particularly beautiful in the autumn as the leaves change colors in the cemetery and on the hills across the river. The location and view provide the sense of peace and tranquility that one would desire for a final resting place for themselves and their loved ones.
